I orginally wrote this on September 1st, 2010 for a little side blog I had started called the crappy photos (now just merged into this blog). PS, I now have over 50 camera apps on my phone, ha.

If you were messing about with handheld gaming devices in the mid to late 90's you know the Gameboy very well, and probably even had the camera attachment for it. I never did, though I wanted one (I opted for the pxl2000 and the Fisher Price fax paper camera, among the de- rigeur selection of Polaroids, more on those later).

The funny thing about things that happened in your past is that the nostalgia for them becomes overwhelming sometimes. I recently decided I really wanted to look into getting one of those cameras. As with anything these days though, I first did a search for "Gameboy Camera" in the app store for my iPhone.

Of course there is a reasonable facsimile there, and it is surprisingly great. I do wish the contrast was a bit higher, it tends to aim to a lot of mid range to me. This ended my quest. (He also has a pretty great c64 camera app, I never knew even existed).

You can check it out here, it will be the first addition to my "Essential iPhone Camera Apps" list, which I plan to continuously update. (I mainly got my iPhone to have a camera always on me, and to take advantage of all the toy camera apps there, I now have 19 on my phone).

My good friends, Dave Coolhands, Strath, and I used to do a zine in the early Naughts called Friends of Sound, it is now a record store in Austin run by Coolhands, go by if you are there for SXSW. It is a great spot.

One of my favorite interviews we ever did was going to visit the incredibly humble, talented mastermind Steve Stein, aka Steinski. A true hiphop pioneer, his series known as "The Lessons" have inspired legions for their ground-breaking, fun, sometimes crude, cut and paste techniques.

I recently watched Mr. Freedom by William Klein, who found success as a fashion photographer for Vogue in the 50's. In the design world though, he is most notably known for his mod Op-Art movie "Who are you Polly Magoo?" (at least to me any ways). A film I only saw within the last 5 years but had known about for the past 15 years, at least, as incredible B&W stills were featured in design and mod books for years.

Mr. Freedom I had only heard about over the past few years, then I recently saw a post on I LOVE HOTDOGS (a great movie website, check their screen caps) and it prompted me to finally rent it. Serge Gainsbourg has a short cameo in it, so for that alone it is worth watching. That is, if you can sit through it. It is beautiful to look at but extremely hard to watch and follow. Though I do like the premise - a satire of American-ism, American and thus Corporate Pride, and the 'my way or the highway' version of foreign relations that has become even more true today than it was then. Incidentally, many of the characters throughout could have been designed by Friends With You or DOMA in Argentina, though none of us were old enough back then. So, watch for them, if you decide you want to watch a 'cool' looking movie that you may not actually watch (my favorite kind).
