Going & Going / No applause

My great friend from Nashville, Shannon, is having a new solo show next week, come by if you are in NY.

Here is the write up..

Shannon Lucy's work continues to push the boundaries of the non-conformist, idealistic art practice.             A sensitivity towards the everyday, the media, and the pressures that confront the artist in her own studio translates here into work that is direct and un-glorified.  Steering clear of the commercial, market-driven commodity, the artist instead dissects moral and cultural conventions and reworks them into fresh and tangible forms with painting and drawing to suit her own artistic endeavors.  Going & Going is an earnest presentation of the trials and tribulations of today's artist, who often finds herself preparing for an inevitably poor reception of her work.

Longing for a world of sincerity and innocence, Lucy questions the role of the artist in society, their duties and function. She bravely presents dynamic and new works for the world to consume, while others around her work safely in their well-defined niche they have carved out for themselves in support of their career ambitions.  With all of the concerns of the bleak economic market, the psychologically introspective works do reference familiar iconography such as the Olympics but also deal with deep-seated ethical questions like 'who really cares?'

We also see the artist's need to categorize and compartmentalize as a means of understanding and perhaps gaining control of the world.   A hint of nostalgia, a touch of innocence and a well rooted academic foundation make her works provocative, poignant and witty.  Going & Going is Shannon Lucy's third solo exhibition in New York and her first here at the gallery.

Going & Going will be open from October 9th through November 14th at Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts at 526 West 26th Street, New York, NY. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, October 8th from 6 – 8pm.
