murder-r-ration....

This is amazing!!!! He even speaks Patois.

From Jamie Foord's Vimeo page.

Derek was born & raised in Bristol, & during the late 50's & early 60's fell in love with the music & culture of the West Indian immigrants moving to Britain. He picked up the lingo by hanging around in barber shops & listening, and picked up the groove by buying & selling reggae records around the country.

Now in his late 60's Derek tours the country armed only with a backpack full of killer tunes, his bus pass & an unquenchable thirst for real ale.

so hawt.

I am so glad to hear that soul music is making a come back.

The real soul music. (Although I love that Adidas used that Pilooski edit of Beggin', so maybe I am glad that old music is making a comeback?).

Anyways, Mayer Hawthorne is killing it with his vocals over a looped up tramp drums beat in his release for Stones Throw (check youtube), but this podcast is perfect as well.

STONES THROW PODCAST 40
Mayer Hawthorne debuted on Stones Throw recently with "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out", printed on a red, heart-shaped 45. His next single is "Maybe So, Maybe No" coming in 2009.

opus forty.

As mentioned in my previous post, we went to this place outside of
Woodstock, NY this weekend called opus40.

www.opus40.org

From their website-
"About one hundred miles from New York City, tucked into a pocket of
the Catskills near Saugerties, lies one of the most extraordinary
pieces of sculpture ever created by a single man. The work is an
immense composition of finely fitted stone, rising in ramps and
swirling terraces around pools and trees and fountains out of the
rock bed of an abandoned bluestone quarry. It spreads out over more
than six acres. "

Created by Harvey Fite who spent almost 40 years sculpting this in
his backyard. It is all dry fitted rock (means it is laying loose,
no mortar).

To think someone spent almost 40 years of their life building this
and died while adding more to it, is just phenomenal. One of the most
magical places I have ever been to. It is amazing that this is
so unknown in NYC, this should be on EVERY weekend get away guide.

I hope Strath has some room on his list of things to see before they
move. Go check it out, it is only open during the summer.

upstate.

Christine and I went upstate over the weekend to visit Miki. Her and
Bob are staying in this amazing old boarding house in the Catskills
for the summer. They are house sitting and helping to show it to
potential buyers.
The girls had a nice Badminton match, I watched. Then we did some outdoor
bbq on Sunday night, with veggies fresh from the local
24 hour farmers market.
